GWE & Friends Updates

Speaker Series is starting up
Sherri Messersmith: February 17th 6-7 PM

We will be kicking off the GWE Speaker Series with Dr. Sherri Messersmith, a Mathematics professor and textbook author, this Thursday 2/17 6-7pm in 630 Bechtel Conference room in Sutardja Dai Hall! The speaker series provides current engineering graduate students with the opportunity to hear the stories of successful women engineers from different backgrounds and walks of life. Come hear the story of Dr. Sherri Messersmith at our first event on Thursday. We will touch on topics including the choices faced when deciding on the next steps after graduate school, navigating one's career, and balancing personal and professional decisions. Due to space limitations, please fill out this RSVP if you plan to attend, and dinner will be provided after the event for in-person attendees. If you are unable to attend but would still like to watch, we will provide a live broadcast (Meeting ID: 931 2801 7965 and Passcode: 436419). Below are the details of all our events, so mark your calendars, and please refer to our attached flyer for more information:

Book and media club

Our next Big IDEAS meeting will be on Monday, February the 28th at noon in front of Pat Brown's! Lunch (sandwiches) included! We'll be discussing the one that got the biggest number of votes -- Movie: CODED BIAS explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all.
GWE Spring Events Announcement

Look out for more communication on upcoming events this spring! These will include a dinner, speed dating, and glow-in-the-dark frisbee and ice cream.

Note that the dinner will require a first-come, first-serve RSVP which will be sent out 2/16.
