Postdoctoral research position in experimental biomechanics and microfluidics

Stanford University’s Mechanical Engineering Department is seeking researchers at the postdoctoral level to lead a combined experimental and theoretical study of the influence of human disease and physiological stress on red blood cell deformability. The project will include significantly expanding a current microfluidic flow system (Saadat et al., 2020) which can quantify the shear modulus of thousands of red blood cells in a few minutes. Potential applications of this system include quantification of athletic performance and recovery and as a marker for long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2. Experience in microfluidic system control, handling biological samples, soft lithography, fluorescence microscopy imaging, and/or bioassays is preferred but not required.

Candidates will have attained a doctoral degree in engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, or closely related field by June 1, 2022. The Co-PIs on this project are Professors Juan G. Santiago (Mechanical Engineering) and Eric Shaqfeh (Chemical Engineering). Applicants are invited to mail or email a CV and list of references to: Professor Juan G. 2022-2023 STEM Solutions in Policy Award
Applications due: 5/13 at 11:59 PM

UC Center Sacramento is pleased to announce the 2022-2023 STEM Solutions in Public Policy Award. This award will recognize one or more outstanding proposals for new California legislation from UC STEM graduate students. The winner(s) will receive $750 for research support and -- should their bill advance through the legislative process –travel expenses covering a trip to Sacramento to convene with Legislators and/or legislative staff.

Submissions will be accepted until midnight Pacific time on May 13, 2022 and applicants will be notified of their status in August 2022. Further information is available at UCCS STEM Solutions or on the UCCS website (https://uccs.ucdavis.edu/)
Rising Stars in Chemical Engineering: An Academic Career Workshop for Women

Chemical Engineering at MIT invites top early-career women who are interested in faculty careers in Chemical Engineering to apply to the ChemE Rising Stars Workshop held on the MIT campus each fall.

Rising Stars brings together the next generation of female academic leaders for two days of scientific interactions and career-oriented discussions. It will feature research presentations by the participants, faculty talks, panels on issues relevant to academic careers, and opportunities for informal networking with faculty members at MIT. Applications and recommendation letters are due Tuesday, May 17.
