Day of Science December 8th, 3:30-5:30 PM Zoom.
Bridges Academy at Melrose is having a Day of Science on Thursday, December 8th from 3:30pm-5:30pm on Zoom. We're looking for 12 scientists to run Zoom rooms where students could explore the activities. Still planning specifics but it'll be roughly physical science themed using balloons. 🎈We've got a few activities including a balloon on a string to show forces and one on static electricity. Please email natalie.lefton@berkeley.edu if you're interested and available 12/8 3:30-5:30 PM to help run these activities on Zoom!

Grad School 101: Managing Relationships with Your Advisor and Co-workers
On Wednesday October 26th 12-1 PM in 1165 Etcheverry Hall we will be having a Grad School 101 Workshop on the topic “Managing Relationships with Your Advisor and Co-workers. This event will consist of a panel of current graduate students answering questions about their lab environment and situations they’ve navigated during graduate school. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP.

Mental Health and Belonging Event with Professor Lisa Pruitt
November 1st, 12:30-2pm in 775 A Tan Hall
Professor Lisa Pruitt from the Mechanical Engineering department at UC Berkeley recently published her memoir, Soul of a Professor: Memoir of an Un-Engineered Life. Her story touches on difficult topics: mental health, anxiety and depression; addiction and an eating disorder; imposter syndrome and facades; and feelings of unworthiness. Murky issues that are often left unspoken, especially in academia.
On Nov 1st from 12:30-2 pm in 775 A Tan Hall, Lisa will be hosting a Mental Health and Belonging event with GWE to discuss some of the topics in her book and facilitate a conversation in our community of women engineers. This event will be intentionally small (~20 attendees) to create a safe space for us to share our experiences and our coping tools. However, if there is overwhelming interest we certainly can hold a similar event in the future!
If you’d like to come, please RSVP here! Lunch will be served, so indicate any dietary restrictions on the RSVP form. Lisa has also generously offered to provide copies of her books to workshop attendees. But if you’d like to check out the book beforehand, you can here (it’s a must read!!).

The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) is an office within the U.S. Department of Energy that funds high-risk, high-reward energy technology development. The ARPA-E Fellows position is a prestigious two-year position that exists to seed innovation and creativity in the agency. Fellows are early-career Ph.D. scientists and engineers who drive program creation, agency strategy, and outreach. They are tasked with generating new ideas to inspire cross-disciplinary solutions, conducting technical and economic analyses, and engaging with world-class government officials, entrepreneurs, investors, academics, and industrial researchers.

Diversifying science also includes thinking about the ways we are making access for all to participate. This includes the language(s) we use to talk, do, and act on science and scientific information. In the second webinar for our new series, "Making Science Accessible for All," the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee brings esteemed panelists to discuss the ways they are making change through advocating for disability access and inclusion. This webinar follows our previous webinar on language accessibility, influenced by the policy position paper published in JSPG () on how we can diversify the language of science beyond English. You'll hear from three esteemed panelists about their experiences and work and will have an opportunity to learn more about ways you can take lessons from the session and apply them in your own environments.

Pinterest will be hosting a Tech Talk next Wednesday, October 19th, from 5-6:30 PM in Soda 606. This talk will be delivered by Rohan Mahadev, a software engineer on the Visual Search Team at Pinterest, focusing on inclusive AI in Machine Learning and the Skin Tone and Hair Pattern models used for content diversification. Dinner will be provided.

STEMVotes Voter Information Night | Wednesday, October 19th | 5-6pm | 375 Physics North
The Science Policy Group (SPG) is hosting an event "STEMVotes Voter Information Night" on Wednesday, October 19th | 5-6pm | 375 Physics North | RSVP link. Although STEM students voted much more in the 2020 election than the 2016 election (yay!), they still voted less than the general public, and this event is a way to get a quick overview of the 2022 candidates and ballot initiatives and encourage students to vote.
