Drink and Decompress Happy Hour
Life is stressful. GWE wants to make it a little less so. This is a space for GWE members to come together on November 4 from 6-8pm and decompress after the 2020 Election. This event is intentionally "unstructured". Some potential ideas for participants are that they can decide to make breakout rooms that are:
  • discussion based (I want to talk about how I feel and hear from others)
  • action-based (I want to talk about making plans with people for what we should do in the near and long term future)
  • game-based (I just want to play games like scribbl and have fun)
  • silence-based (I just want to turn my video off and listen to music with my fellow members to relax and reflect)
Members can be reimbursed up to $20 each for dinner or one alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage. Save your receipts, reimbursement form will be sent out at and after the meeting.
Attend SWE National Conference
If you are a student of the College of Engineering (COE) and you are interested in attending the All Virtual SWE National Conference held Nov 2 to Nov 13, please contact Meltem Erol (merol@berkeley.edu), the Director of Graduate Student Outreach for COE.
UC Berkeley Graduate Diversity Admissions Fair 2020
Please help us share this event with your undergraduate institutions:
Join the University of California, Berkeley for a virtual Graduate Diversity Admissions Fair. Registration if open to all interested participants. The event hosted by the Office for Graduate Diversity.

Fellowships and Professional Development

Sandia National Lab
Sandia National Laboratories is beginning its campaign to attract qualified candidates for the Harry S. Truman Fellowship and Jill Hruby Fellowship in National Security Science and Engineering. The deadline for applying is November 1, 2020. Flyers are attached.

Both Fellowships are three-year postdoctoral research appointments and will allow recipients to conduct independent research that supports Sandia's national security mission and prepare them to advance in their field. The Hruby Fellows also participate in a leadership development program. Fellows may work at either principal Sandia location in Albuquerque, NM or Livermore, CA, and will receive a salary of $111,200. Candidates must be able to obtain a security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, and be seeking their first national laboratory appointment. They must have been awarded a PhD within the past three years or must complete PhD requirements by commencement of appointment.
Contact Anna Barr (abarr@sandia.gov) if you have additional questions.

The John von Neumann Fellowship for innovative postdoctoral research in computational mathematics and scientific computing, runs on a different schedule. Please encourage interested candidates to check the following link or contact Michael Parks for more information.
Toyota Research Initiative
At Toyota Research Institute (TRI), we’re working to build a future where everyone has the freedom to move, engage, and explore with a focus on reducing vehicle collisions, injuries, and fatalities. Join us in our mission to improve the quality of human life through advances in artificial intelligence, automated driving, robotics, and materials science. We’re dedicated to building a world of “mobility for all” where everyone, regardless of age or ability, can live in harmony with technology to enjoy a better life. Through innovations in AI, we’ll help…
  • Develop vehicles incapable of causing a crash, regardless of the actions of the driver.
  • Develop technology for vehicles and robots to help people enjoy new levels of independence, access, and mobility.
  • Bring advanced mobility technology to market faster.
  • Discover new materials that will make batteries and hydrogen fuel cells smaller, lighter, less expensive and more powerful.
  • Develop human-centered AI systems to augment (not replace) human decision making to increase the quality of decisions (e.g. mitigate cognitive biases) and/or to facilitate faster innovation cycles.
Our work is guided by a dedication to safety – in both what we research and how we perform our research our goal is to benefit society. As a subsidiary of Toyota, TRI is fueled by a diverse and inclusive community of people who carry invaluable leadership, experience, and ideas from industry-leading companies. We’re continually searching for the world’s best talent ‒ people who are ready to define the new world of mobility with us! Contact Janet Bourland (janet.bourland.ctr@tri.global) directly for more information and see Internship Job Posting!
Online Course to Prepare for LEED Certification
The LEED Professional Designation has helped past participants attain internships, jobs and advanced their careers in multiple fields and now is a great time to add this credential. LEED is simply a sustainability scorecard for green buildings. Buildings can become LEED Certified as can people! The best way to break into the sustainability space is to attain the LEED Green Associate. It also shows employers and clients you have certified knowledge in the field. Since the LEED GA exam doesn’t have a stellar pass rate, the value of the extra letters behind your name will carry even more weight. This course is instructed by a USGBC Faculty member and is the most effective way to pass. The USGBC charges a $100 (reduced for students) fee for the actual exam which can now be taken online from home. Save money by reserving your spot today and make a positive difference in your career!

Cost: $200 - Students can use the coupon code ‘green’ for $50 off (Discounted course price $150)
Save your seat by registering here for our live or self-paced options - Please contact the instructor Lorne directly with any questions at info@leadinggreen.com, and for those new to LEED, here is a short introduction.

Kittelson & Associates, Careers in Transportation
Join Kittelson & Associates for a series of virtual conversations to learn about many aspects of a career in transportation!
  • What do transportation planning and engineering projects look like on a day-to-day basis?
  • What are the biggest challenges requiring innovation from the transportation industry today?
  • What kinds of career paths exist within the transportation profession, and how can I know which path is for me?
This year, we’ve decided to expand the webinar to a seven-part series. Each event in the series will be hosted by a different set of Kittelson team members and will consist of a short presentation followed by lots of time for Q&A. This way students can pick and choose the topics that interest them the most and benefit from more open discussion. Additionally, the new format gives us meaningful time to connect with students in the virtual environment.

To learn more about the series, check out this overview of dates and topics.

This October, Berkeley celebrates 150 Years of Women (150W) being admitted to the university. At the beginning of this year, Graduate Womxn’s* Project (GWP) proposed a zine to highlight and document the amazing work of Berkeley’s graduate womxn. The zine will be a living project, and all graduate womxn are welcome to participate by sharing music, poems, short stories, photography, dance performances, visual media - anything you’d like to share! We aim to produce a hardcopy and a digital platform to allow for all types of creative expressions. If you're interested in volunteering with the GWP Zine Working Group, please complete this form.

The website to submit your work will be released soon, so stay tuned! The GA GWP is also highlighting amazing graduate womxn! Please nominate a friend, colleague, or GSI to be featured on GWP’s social media platforms. Subscribe to the GWP listserv here, follow us on Instagram and Facebook.
